Are Court Records Public in Bossier Parish?

Court records in Bossier Parish are presumptively open to public inspection under the Louisiana Public Records Act (La. R.S. 44:1 et seq.). Under La. R.S. 44:32, any person of the age of majority may request access to a public record, and the custodian is prohibited from inquiring into the requester’s purpose beyond verifying age and, where applicable, residency.

Certain categories of records are exempt from public disclosure by statute or court order. Records that are typically restricted or sealed include:

  • Juvenile court records — confidential under the Louisiana Children’s Code; access requires court authorization
  • Adoption records — sealed and accessible only by court order
  • Grand jury proceedings — closed by law
  • Mental health case files — protected by confidentiality statutes
  • Certain family law records — particularly those involving child protection or abuse allegations
  • Sealed or expunged criminal records — not available for public inspection once a court order of expungement has been issued

Personal identifiers such as Social Security numbers and financial account numbers may be redacted from publicly accessible documents to protect individual privacy. Newly filed cases may also have restricted access for a limited period before the initial hearing.

Anyone wishing to inspect records in person may do so at the Clerk of Court’s office during regular hours. The Clerk is not required to create new records or compile information that does not already exist in recorded form.
