Iberia Parish sits in south-central Louisiana along the Gulf Coast, with New Iberia serving as the parish seat. All major trial court matters—criminal prosecutions, civil lawsuits, family disputes, successions, and small claims—are adjudicated by the 16th Judicial District Court, which serves Iberia, St. Martin, and St. Mary Parishes. The Iberia Parish Clerk of Court is the official custodian of case records generated in these proceedings, maintaining filings, orders, judgments, and other documents in both paper and electronic formats. The parish also has two city courts, three Justice of the Peace courts, and a Mayor’s Court that handle limited-jurisdiction matters.

Court records in Louisiana can be accessed through a combination of official clerk offices, in-person visits to the courthouse, and online resources. The Iberia Parish Clerk of Court operates from the Iberia Parish Courthouse at 300 Iberia Street in New Iberia and offers several records services both at the counter and through its website. Land records, marriage licenses, and civil and criminal case indexes for multiple parishes are also searchable through the eClerks LA statewide portal, a free tool maintained by participating clerks of court offices across the state. For broader Louisiana court case information, LouisianaCourts.us may also assist in locating publicly available records.

Are Court Records Public in Iberia Parish?

Court records in Iberia Parish are generally accessible to the public. Louisiana’s Public Records Law (La. R.S. 44:1 et seq.) grants any person the right to examine and copy public documents maintained by government agencies, including the Clerk of Court. This right extends to most civil case filings, judgments, orders, and other court documents.

However, the Public Records Law contains specific exemptions. Records that are not subject to public disclosure include:

  • Security procedures, criminal intelligence, and terrorist threat assessments
  • School crisis management plans
  • Law enforcement investigative records related to ongoing or anticipated criminal prosecutions
  • Confidential informant identities from legislative investigations
  • Legislative investigation records until conclusion of the matter
  • Records whose release would constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy

Louisiana is also a “closed records” state with respect to vital records and criminal history, meaning certified copies of birth certificates, death certificates, and complete criminal history information are available only to authorized individuals as defined by statute.

When a requested court record contains both public and non-public information, the Clerk’s office will redact or separate the confidential portions before releasing the public material. Requesters should be prepared to provide identification and, for certain record types, documentation establishing their legal entitlement to access.
