Jefferson Parish, the most populous parish in the New Orleans metropolitan area, operates a multi-layered court system that generates a substantial volume of records each year. The 24th Judicial District Court, two parish courts, a juvenile court, multiple justice of the peace courts, and several mayor’s courts all produce documents ranging from criminal case files and civil pleadings to family law judgments and probate filings. Anyone who needs to locate a judgment, confirm a case disposition, or obtain a certified copy of a court order will benefit from knowing which office holds the record and how to request it.

Court records in Louisiana can be searched through a combination of official clerk offices, online portals, and in-person visits to the courthouse. The Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court maintains most district and parish court records and offers both free docket viewing and a paid subscription service for document downloads. For broader information about Louisiana’s court system, LouisianaCourts.us may help users locate publicly available court case information and identify the appropriate court for a particular type of case.

Are Court Records Public in Jefferson Parish?

Under the Louisiana Public Records Law (La. R.S. 44:1 et seq.), the public has a broad right to inspect and copy records maintained by government custodians, including court records. Most case filings, docket entries, judgments, orders, and pleadings in Jefferson Parish courts are available to anyone who requests them.

Several categories of records are restricted or exempt from public disclosure:

  • Juvenile court records — Not available for public examination under Louisiana law. They are not accessible through JeffNet, and requests must be directed to the Juvenile Court Clerk.
  • Adoption records — All adoption proceedings are sealed by law. Under Louisiana Children’s Code Article 1186, adoption records must be retained in confidential files and cannot be disclosed except by written court authorization or to certain specified parties.
  • Sealed records — Any case file or document placed under seal by court order remains inaccessible until the seal is lifted.
  • Active investigation records — Law enforcement files related to ongoing investigations are exempt.
  • Personal identifying information — Social security numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account numbers, and full dates of birth are protected. Under La. C.C.P. Art. 253 and La. C.Cr.P. Art. 14.1 (effective January 1, 2026), filers must redact these details to the last four digits in all filed documents.
  • Medical and mental health records, trade secrets, and minors’ identifying information are also restricted.

When a record is only partially exempt, the custodian must redact the protected portions and provide the remainder. If a request is denied and you believe you have legal justification for access, you may file a motion in the District Court seeking a writ of mandamus.
