Orleans Parish—coextensive with the City of New Orleans—operates a court structure unlike any other in Louisiana. Rather than a single district court with criminal and civil divisions, Orleans Parish maintains separate courts: the Civil District Court, the Criminal District Court, a Juvenile Court, two City Courts, and a Municipal and Traffic Court. Each court has its own clerk or administrative office, which means the path to locating a particular record depends on the type of case involved. Understanding which courthouse holds the file you need is the essential first step.
Court records generated in Louisiana parishes can often be located through a combination of official clerk portals, statewide databases, and in-person visits. The Louisiana Courts website maintained by the Supreme Court of Louisiana offers general information about the court system and links to individual court sites. LouisianaCourts.us may also help users find publicly available court case data. In Orleans Parish specifically, the Civil Clerk of Court, the Criminal District Court Clerk, and the Municipal and Traffic Court each provide separate online lookup tools, making it possible to search many records without visiting the courthouse.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Orleans Parish?
Because Orleans Parish splits its courts by subject matter, the search method varies depending on the case type.
Civil, Family, Probate, and Property Cases
These records are maintained by the Orleans Parish Civil Clerk of Court. There are two primary online tools:
- Case Inquiry – A free search tool that returns basic docket information for civil cases filed in the Civil District Court.
- Remote Access System – A subscription-based service offering access to all records systems maintained by the Civil Clerk, including case data from 1985 forward, scanned images from 2010 forward, and land records indexes dating back to 1987.
Remote Access subscription rates:
| Duration | Cost |
|---|---|
| 24 hours | $20.00 |
| 30 days | $100.00 |
| 365 days | $700.00 |
Separate escrow accounts must be funded to print or download document images from the system. To subscribe, visit the Online Records page or apply in person at the Civil Clerk’s office.
Criminal Cases
Criminal case information is now searchable through Clerk Connect, a multi-parish portal that replaced the former Docket Master system in November 2025. Orleans Parish criminal inquiry subscriptions are available at no cost—users simply create an account, select a subscription, and can begin searching without providing payment information.
Municipal and Traffic Cases
The Municipal and Traffic Court of New Orleans maintains its own online portal where users can search cases by case number, defendant name, or date of birth.

Are Court Records Public in Orleans Parish?
Louisiana’s constitution and the Louisiana Public Records Act (La. R.S. 44:1 et seq.) establish a broad right of public access to government records. Any person may request to inspect or copy public records, and the custodian generally must comply within a reasonable time. Court filings, docket entries, judgments, and orders are presumed open to the public.
Several categories of records are exempt from disclosure, however:
- Juvenile records – Under Louisiana Children’s Code Article 412, all records and reports concerning matters before the juvenile court (except traffic violations) are confidential and cannot be disclosed except to authorized parties.
- Sealed and expunged records – Criminal records that have been sealed or expunged by court order are no longer publicly accessible.
- Trade secrets and proprietary information – Documents containing protected commercial information are exempt.
- Law enforcement investigative records – Pending investigation files maintained by the district attorney or police are exempt from disclosure until the litigation is resolved.
- Confidential source information – Records that would reveal the identity of a law enforcement confidential source are restricted.
- Minor victim information – Records that would disclose personal details of a victim who is a minor are exempt.
- Personal identifiers – Social Security numbers and similar private data that would violate personal privacy if disclosed are redacted or withheld.
Records containing partially exempt information may still be released after the restricted portions are redacted.
